O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high-school student. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. However, she was a major loser in the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were stunned by this and instructed the crowd to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the bottom three once again. Her performance on the 7th of September of 2005 was awe-inspiring that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially announced by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
