Jennifer Garner, who was born in and raised in Charleston West Virginia, on April 17th, 1973 was born in Houston, Texas. William John Garner was her father. He was also a chemical engineer for Union Carbide. Her mother Patricia Ann taught at a local college. To follow her father, she graduated with an engineering degree in chemical science. Since she wanted to be an actress, she went to New York. She was employed at a restaurant as well as appearing in Broadway plays. She had a cameo role in the television series "Felicity." (It is in this series when she met her first husband, Scott Foley.) Garner had her first big performance with "13 going on thirty", a romantic comedy which was highly acclaimed. She was a teen woman trapped in the body of an adult. Garner chose Gary Winick (director) to direct the film. The two searched for new opportunities until Winick's death in 2011. Garner received the title of an artist ambassador for Save the Children U.S.A. Apart from encouraging early education, literacy, and nutrition on a national level, Garner's role involves promoting national literacy. Garner was named to the board of directors of this non-profit organization in 2014. Garner advocates for early childhood development. As a spokesperson, she travels often with families who are part of Early Steps to School Success, a program that coaches parents in how to assist young children to learn.
